Cartoon Network has unveiled the winners of its collaboration that paired London College of Fashion’s future generation of fashion designers with iconic superheroes The Powerpuff Girls.
The finished articles were unveiled during a showcase event at Somerset House in London last Friday, 15 February, as London Fashion Week kicked off in the capital.
Fashion’s future power players went head to head to take home their share of a £5,500 prize pool, but it was third-year students Cara Edden and Hana Hussein who took the £3,000 first prize for their designs.
Judges praised the winning design for encapsulating the ethos of The Powerpuff Girls through strong contrasts of silhouettes and exaggerated layers, while ensuring that the playfulness of the brand was represented with colour and embellishments.
The expert judging panel was made up of fashion influencer Nathalie Ballout, a style writer, a representative from one of the UK’s biggest fashion retailers, the MA Programme Director at London College of Fashion, and Leila Loumi, International Licensing Director of Softlines and Health and Beauty at Cartoon Network Enterprises, who says: “The students were inspired by The Powerpuff Girls positivity and attitude and we, the judges, were inspired by the students vision and innate ability to take an iconic brand and create something completely new. The future of British fashion is very bright indeed!”
A second prize of £1,500 was awarded to Laura Ubeda, Angelo La Barbera, Sofia Marino and Olivia Rubens for their ability to translate the girls’ different personalities to design through varying textiles, prints and fabrics. The £1,000 third prize went to In (Tony) Lee, Faye Arguelles, Polina Gorkovenko and Thanakhom Sittiarttakorn for their use of techniques, which included 3D embroidery as well as laser-cut etching and digital print.
